Steve Abbott to Run for Governor

Republican sources confirm what Matthew Gagnon is also reporting today - Senator Susan Collins' Chief of Staff Steve Abbott will soon enter the race for governor.

Apparently, Abbott has already made the decision to contest the GOP nomination and was quite open about his intentions while attending the Maine Heritage Policy Center event yesterday in South Portland.

Speculation that Abbott would make the race has been prevalent for more than a year and increased after Abbot sat down for a wide-ranging interview on WLBZ/WCSH last December.

Abbott?

You're kidding. Abbott may run Collins' office, but how does that qualify him to run Maine?

Tegeder for Governor 2010

Tegeder needs to be Governor. Maine needs a real leader who is not afraid to cut spending. He will be able to achieve consierable tax relief (a/k/a putting more of our own money in our pockets to spend on our own families) after he controls the out of control spending. Tegeder for Maine 2010!

Tegeder

Who is Tegeder? He is a serious contender for the governor seat in 2010?

Thanks for the support!

I appreciate the strong support! Thanks for listening. I am close to deciding on whether or not to throw the old hat into the ring. As every day goes by I feel a stronger pull to make things right. It is time to take Maine back from Augusta and turn it over to Mainers. THE WAY LIFE SHOULD BE, not THE WAY GOVERNMENT DICTATES HOW LIFE SHOULD BE. Unlike the folks currently in August and unlike the dozen or so governor wanna bees, I will minimize government interference in our daily lives. Rob Tegeder

If Tegeder is not actively

If Tegeder is not actively pursuing the position of Governor of Maine, he should be. I have known him for a long time and he is an intelligent and articulate person. He understands the need to stick with the root principles of what most Mainers want to maintain. But, he also has enough business experience and acumen to bring much needed, reasonable and responsible business development to the state. Fiscal Conservatism is definitely one of his strong beliefs.

In response to the question,

In response to the question, "How does that qualify him (Abbott) to run Maine?":

The implication that working for Senator Collins will have offered insufficient education as to how to run the state is laughable. Are there not myriad ways of earning the leadership skills necessary to successfully helm a state government?

Abbott has paid his dues, having dedicated himself to Maine politics since leaving Harvard (and let us remember, notwithstanding its current economic woes, Harvard has always maintained extraordinarily high standards for admission to its college. That they took Abbott even with that thick Down East accent of his is remarkable.). Collins will assert that he was always a dedicated part of her team. Working with a politician of substance like Collins, Abbott has doubtless honed his own political savvy. Working with a woman, Abbott has doubtless honed his ability to listen to Mainers, a vitally important quality for a governor steering the state through times like these.

I admire Abbott for his political ambition. I imagine he has had many opportunities shown him, yet here he is, in an economic crisis that rivals the Depression, running for public office. Mainers should count themselves lucky to have him in the race.
