The theme in state government seems to be "Don't worry, if you vote for me, I will NOT raise taxes". Although popular, is it really the truth?
Think about this for a minute..
If a head start program closes because of reduced funding due to cut backs, the employees all lose a job. Is this not a tax on the employees? it may not be monetary, but they are certainly paying for the cut backs. - along with the clients who now need to find different, if not more expensive, day care for their children.
When state employees are forced to take a 10 day furlough, is this not a tax on them? Again, they were not required to pay additional taxes, but their income was certainly reduced!
There are many effects of state cutbacks that are paid for by the minority. Please understand, I am very much in favor of eliminating needless programs, but when we start cutting necessary ones, then I submit it is foolish and short sighted.
The point is there IS a tax - just not one that is shared by the majority. I know it is not popular, but a 1% increase in the sales tax would be a great solution. We ALL will share in the costs of state government - including visitors from away.
Give me a candidate that is willing to take the risk of explaining this to the populace and I'll give you my vote!
Let's all understand taxes
To the people of Maine....
