To defend my town, I understand that South Portland voted "No" on 1 by a 60-40 ratio. Not Portland's 70-30 but not that bad! (We are also very proud of our gay legislators.) A personal comment on what we could have done better: our leaders were terrific and tireless, but some of their followers could have done a lot more. I myself didn't even canvass my own tightly-knit block, though I did phone-banking, election-day canvassing, etc. Next time I will begin with my neighbors.
