Primary Concern

Ignoring Justin Ellis' prohibition, two more Republican candidates have entered the race for governor. Steve Abbott's website is now up, draped in a tasteful maroon reminiscent of his Orono High School days (go Red Riots) and the campaign has three launch events scheduled today in Portland, Orono and Presque Isle. He also has an impressive list of early supporters.

Another Republican seems to be taking a very different tack. Husson College President William Beardsley has registered his candidacy with the ethics commission with zero fanfare.

Update: The BDN reports that Beardsley will have a formal announcement later this week.

It's time for fresh, new thinking

Steve seems to be a fine family man, and I wish him well. But I don't wish him for our state's highest office. I think I'm like a lot of Mainers (and Americans in general) who are tired of same-old insider politics. Those in the Republican party may have the best of intention, but it's the costly unintended consequences that we're actually left with. It's time for fresh thinking and ideas that are 180 degrees away from traditional, moderate Republican (and forget about Democratic) solutions. It's Bruce [Poliquin] For ME. Anyone who hasn't met this guy should make an effort to show up at an event where he's talking with people. I first met him at the Lobster Fest this summer and have been following his campaign ever since. I'm ready to try some truly new ideas.

Abbott for Governor?

I don't like the idea of professional political staffers running for office in general, but if they must, shouldn't they run for the office they have at least SOME qualifications to hold?

Steve Abbott is unquestionably a politically talented guy who has done good work for Sen. Collins, and after 12 years as a high-level Hill staffer, probably has some good insight into the legislative process. I would definitely consider supporting his candidacy for Congress, but nothing he has done even remotely qualifies him to be the administrator of a state, particularly one in the kind of fiscal crisis we are facing in Maine.

I'm going to vote for the candidate I believe has the most economic experience, and is a change from the network of "good old boys" that have been running this state into the ground for years.
