Diamon Gets Biblical

In his column this week, Al Diamon examines some of the arguments made by same-sex marriage opponents in Maine and finds a common thread:

They’re basing their convictions on the Bible.

At least, the parts they agree with.

They’re comfortable quoting the chapters where God comes down hard on incest, adultery and homosexuality, but less likely to mention the verses where He gives a pass to polygamy, wife-beating and the summary execution of people who marry outside their tribes.

Diamon also references Neil Rolde's testimony on the history of marriage in Maine, which I posted here.

misrepresenting the Bible

You are misrepresenting the Bible when you say that God 'gives a pass to polygamy, wife-beating and the summary execution of people who marry outside their tribes.'

If you read Deuteronomy 17:17, it says 'Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.' This shows what happened to King Solomon - his multiplied wives and riches turned him away from God. The Bible doesn't condone what man does - it shows what happens by example.

Also, in Ezra 10, the Bible says the people were instructed to put away their foreign wives, not kill them. Note this was an Old Testament instruction - as it says in Galatians 3:28, 'There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.' When Jesus died and His blood paid for the sins of all who would believe in Him, the curtain was torn in the temple around the Holy Place. The Old Testament showed a picture of God's Holiness in separating a people for His own, and the New Testament shows a picture of God's grace in cleansing ALL those who believe in Him by His blood. God has even given dreams to people all over the world and they have walked for miles to be part of a church.
