If you haven't yet done your taxes, be sure to take a second to check "yes" at the top of the state form to support clean elections in Maine. It's free for you and supports a very worthy program.
As the Sun Journal put it today:
Cheers to checking "Yes" on line 1 of the Maine income tax form to fund clean elections. The state has borrowed heavily from the clean elections fund for other reasons over the years, leaving the program with a $4.4 million deficit. There's talk of getting some of it back, but not in full. (That's how the state works, you know.)
If the budget-counters in Augusta can't fund the program, the public should. Citizens created clean elections, after all; checking yes on the tax form is simply re-stating this case.
I agree with checking the box
I agree with checking the box and did so on my return. The problem is nothing keeps the Legislature from stealing the money in the fund -- even the money from the check off.

Thank you for posting this, and i agree with Dan above.
This is a great program, but the legislature needs to quit "borrowing" from the fund. Where I come from, if you borrow something and don't put it back, it is called what Dan called it.
For now, let's restore the fund, and then don't mess with it again.

Don't want to pay for road signs
Political candidates have an exemption for placing signs by public roadways, I say repeal it. Charge anyone who places a political sign on public land for littering, $200 a pop.
Since a good portion of the clean election money goes for paying for these signs, you won't need so much.
Sorry to the sign-makers. We need to stop this waste and keep our area from looking like a political wasteland. Natural beauty is Maine's best asset.
If you voted for someone because they had a nice road sign, then please let us know!
