The Lewiston Sun Journal reports that leaders in both the Democratic and Republican parties in Androscoggin County agree that Democrat Helen Poulin, who represents Lewiston on the County Commissioner, should not be permitted to maintain her seat after her recent move to Auburn.
Both county chairmen are now calling for her resignation, but Poulin is refusing to step down, claiming ambiguity in the law.
The law is pretty straightforward:
Elections Director Packard said she, too, was surprised by the question. The law seems fairly clear, she said.
"Members of each board of commissioners must be residents of the commissioner districts which they represent and shall be elected by the voters of that district," reads Maine law.
